Online marketing for small business has changed a lot over the last 13 years since online marketing really got started. I remember the first time we ever ran ads. We ran paid ads on Yahoo and in the very first week we did it we got a $20,000 client. I think we must have spent about $2.00 that week.
I have an uncle who runs a family grocery store. He puts promotional signs and posters every now and then on his front door to drive sales. He has not been implementing any small business marketing strategies because he does not have access to such a resource. If only he had reached out for some expert advice, I bet his business will not remain that small over the years.
Those days are definitely gone forever, but every once in a while, a new niche that pops up is profitable. Companies pay billions of dollars to implement marketing campaigns online. Getting your site to do well on Google, if you can figure out how to do it, pays residual bonuses for business for years to come. Most other online marketing for online businesses are a complete waste of money. Facebook ads these days are getting tougher and tougher to make a profit. For some industries that are less competitive, the paid advertising in Google will work okay, but for a lot of businesses it’s so competitive because the experts are so efficient at it, that you’ll have a real tough time outbidding them and getting your site to be profitable for you.
One place, because it’s relatively new, where you can make a huge advantage relatively easily, is using word of mouth network marketing. If you’re trying to do online marketing for your small business doing well on these kind of sites, and if your industry has a lot of activity, it can be massively profitable.
One way you can find out is to simply enter your industry and your city name into Yelp or Angie’s List, and see how many reviews people have. If the top spot only has one or two reviews, it means not many of your people are going on word of mouth networks related to that industry, and it’s probably not worth the effort but it will be in the future.
On the other hand, if you see the top-rated businesses have 5, 10 or more reviews, then that means there’s literally hundreds of people, or thousands of people, looking at those reviews who are potential customers if you’re in one of the top spots. So if you’re doing online marketing for your small business and the word of mouth network sites are really active in your industry and your town, then I recommend that you do whatever it takes to make sure you’re one of the top few businesses.
Once you’re down to being the fourth or fifth business, you’ll get almost no customers from it, but the guy who’s in the first and second spot can get a ton of new business referred to them. The best part about it is it’s all free and doesn’t cost you any money, and it doesn’t take any real technical skills.
On the other hand, there are a lot of things you or your employees could do to really screw up your review if you don’t know what you’re doing. So, although you could just start talking to customers about reviews and get some activity going, I highly recommend you get trained up on it.
